I like wide spur hammers and I can not lie
Brother Bawanna can not deny..

Well, Sir Mix-A-Lot I'm not, but I do like wide spur hammers on 1911's.

I helped a buddy stake a front sight on his Colt recently and we installed an aftermarket rear sight during the same session (old sight had been filed down). The rear sight he choose was one with a set screw and it had a sizable gap between it and the bottom of the slide dovetail. He called after a couple of days to ask if I thought we could shim/fill the gap. I thought we could try, but while he was on the way over to my place I found a Colt take off sight I had on-hand. He liked that, so we installed it instead. I relay all that because when we were finished, he asked if I wanted a wide spur hammer that was in a parts lot he had purchased. He didn't have to ask me twice...it's a nice hammer.:)
I decided to put it on the M1991A1 I'd just refinished. Here it is installed:

As I hadn't shot the 1991 yet and he wanted to try out his sights, we headed out to the desert. I fired two rounds at the target we set out at 15 yds. and thought I had missed on the second shot. I actually checked to see if my rear sight was loose, but turned out there was no need to worry about that:

I know when to quit:D and moved to the steel target we had with us;)

Like you I adore the look of long wide-spur hammers. Unfortunately my fleshy hands don't agree with the rest of me. A Band-Aid across the web helps but I still get nipped. I've found the shorter WW2-era wide-spur still gives me the look I like but doesn't *** me as easily.

Sweet Mary and Joseph, that gives me a chubby right there, and that shooting I'd say there's zero room for improvement. That's a keeper.

When you swap a hammer like that do you use the same sear etc? I'm fixing to put a wide spur hammer on that Remington I got. That was the main reason for desiring that model. I haven't got to shoot it yet either but soon I hope.

I've a shorter, wide spur hammer on my Remington;fortunately neither style bites me.:)

Yes boss, I just swap out the hammers, then do a safety and function check (http://www.coolgunsite.com/funcheck/function.htm). If there is too much creep, pull is too heavy, etc, I might go back in and fix that (and recheck safety and function), but this Colt and my R1S didn't need any further work.

Greg

I kind of like the looks of the blued on there even better than the Remington one and I absolutely love that one.
Fusion makes one that looks decent.

Turnbull has one that is nice but they want like 150+ just for the hammer.

Fusion is like 20 bucks. Looked at others, most had mixed reviews.

FWIW, thats one reason I prefer either the full length govy grip safety, or a grip safety thats been reduced to match the contours at the back of the frame, or maybe just a little bit sticking out, not much.

The govy one works for me, but won't work with the commander type hammers that I like. Hence I shorten and smooth the grip safety and refinish, with the understanding that what ain't there can't bite ya!

Love those wide hammers, had a short one put on my 1926 Argentine so it would quit eating my hand.

Once bitten, twice shy, but I'm still a wide spur hammer guy. Very nice, Gary.

Those Remington's not only feel great they shoot great right out of the box. I to like a wider hammer on a 1911 and the only thing I would change on a Remington. In my opinion, and for the money they are one of the best buys out there in an American made 1911.
As for MUGGSY's mod...."I just love the look, and the feel of a 1911 in the morning, it looks like victory"...... Pure perfection!
