Most new gun owners go for "value" (read cheap) ammo first, and with nothing to compare it to, and don't know it's dirty, etc.
Once they advance to "carry" ammo, from a clean gun, they realize just how dirty most bulk stuff is.

For me bulk ammo is a good source for brass, and not much else.
With the right combination of components, ammo reloaded by you, shoots accurate and clean., and is "cheap".

Oh, sometimes the 50 or 100 count boxes of ammo are cheaper per round.

just sayin'

I've used both the Remington UMC and Winchester White Box (WWB) bulk packs from Walmart in 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. Both are fine for practice ammo, and are not terribly dirty. The least expensive route to take at Walmart is Federal in 50-round boxes. I've not had problems with any of these. Many IDPA competitors run WWB. If you use light striker/hammer springs, the softer Federal primers are more reliable.
