Just got one in yesterday - a SIG 1911 C3 to replace the one stolen a couple of weeks ago. This is the picture of the old one but they're the same. Also will be ordering the Colt to replace a Loaded SA SS ultra Compact, also stolen. I haven't decided whether to replace the RIA nickel Tactical.

To me, the leather that you carry in is almost as important as the pistol itself.
A good rig is comfortable, and provides reliable access when needed....
I have never understood why people buy a nice gun, then slap it into cheap crap.

Eh alot of crap going on the home front (lack of electrician apprentice jobs making crap harder), ended up selling *gulp* :eek: my mg42 to make ends meet (also wasnt a pratical gun due to ammo avalibility here, 3 trips to the car to load and unload and so forth). still got the 1919a4 though :D.

I still stop in, just havent had anything really to contribute posting wise, but im always lurking in the shadows ;)

I just finished the grips in the upcoming photo's about half an hour ago. Actually I might have to play with them a little bit more tomorrow, feel just a little bit thick.

Someday I'll figure out how to post big pictures and I'll be able to run with the big boys. Course Old Lincoln does a pretty splendid job taking care of my computer weakness's.

Sadly I was out slimming them down a bit more this morning and got them where I wanted them. Decided to use rubber orings in addition to the neoprene backing I used, said to prevent cracking.
Tightened the top grip screw and presto slama jama BIG STUPID CRACK. 6-8 hours down the comode. I'm gonna glue it back together, the neoprene at least kept it together perfectly so I can get a clean joint. I'll just keep these for myself. These were destined for JohnH but alas I ain't sending the boss 2nd class firewood.

I think I'm pretty much done with this stablilized wood stuff. I've had cracks in real wood but this is 2 for 2 cracked with stablized. I even coated the outside with epoxy like a guy recommended and then sanded it down. No Love.

Oh well out to the bench to do a glue repair job. Glad the gun wasn't loaded, might have been too much temptation.

Don't know if they still do this, but my old Hi-Power 22 has brass inserts for the screws. The screw heads don't taper but are the boxy looking things (I can't remember the name). They should work very well for your grips. I'll do a lookup but if someone else knows maybe they can chime in here.

Yeah those are what I use on revolvers. Keeps the screw head from working its way into the wood. I need to order more, I'm about out. Would like to find some better ones than I have but only ones I can find.

The bushing and screws on a 1911 actually work the same way kind of sorta.

I just messed up and listened to somebody else rather than go with my own plan. The orings were just too much but I'm finding the wood just to delicate and fragile too.

I thought stabilized wood is more epoxy than wood. Reading up on it in case I mess with that spaulted maple. Trick is the pros use vacuum containers to suck out the air in the pores, then switch over to pressure to force epoxy into them.

I saw some setups using large Mason Jars and auto brake bleeder pumps to suck the air out, but that's more than I want to do. One home made unit that would work well used the old painters unit with pressure pot that had a lid screwed down with wingnuts. They said you can do vacuum and pressure without opining the unit.

Perhaps a call to one of the pro sellers would clear things up, cause lots of folks make grips from it and I suspect your wood just needs better stabilizing.

I'm thinking along the same lines. This is pro stabilized. Supposedly injected at I can't remember now what PSI but a lot of pressure.

It seems stablilized all the way thru and smells and works almost like fiberglass. I don't know if this particular flavor of wood isn't strong or he's not doing the stablilizing right or what.

I was all excited as like you say it's suppose to be tough as nails and great durable stuff but this stuff sure ain't making it.

I'm gonna try again to get hold of the outfit in Iowa. He had some real pretty Box Elder Burl with 2 color injection. He claims he stabilized a huge pile of wood for Ruger for handles. They want it cause it checkers very well, I of course haven't tried any of that yet but working with this stuff I think checkering would be a challenge. Still hard and soft spots.

Just mother nature paying back for all the sins of my earlier life.

I had some birdseye maple burl a while back that was sweet looking and it worked really well. Alas it didn't last long.

Here's my one and only. A Springfield Armory I bought back in the 90's. Only mods are a Bill Wilson full size guide rod and a group gripper. Not a real beauty queen but is accurate and reliable. Next mod is to add some decent sights. It still has those military type sights that I have trouble seeing nowadays.

Thats my stainless Officer's ACP. Colt slide and most parts, Caspian receiver, Storm Lake/Sig barrel. This one now has some light colored wood, medium thick double diamond grips. Also... Brownells sells those hammers, and if they're all like the one I got, they're great. Well heat treated, and well finished. Works well with the EGW "Hard Sear".

Remington Rand slide, Caspian receiver, Sig barrel, most parts Colt. This pistol has one of the nicest slide/frame fits I've ever accomplished. It just all worked out well, minor lapping and presto... like riding on bearings.

Commander built with Viking slide (which is weird, only fits Viking frames unless you modify it), Storm Lake/Sig barrel, and Caspian frame (modified). Like the others, most parts Colt. All the parts except the receiver were used together on another pistol, whose receiver cracked. I don't think this one will, and the frame modification - rail shortening - wasn't where the other one cracked. Shoots nice.

The grip safeties have been swapped between those two guns. The smaller svelt one is now on the Officer's ACP, and the shortened more traditional "1911" one is on the Commander.

And... the Tactical Solutions .22 conversion, which is basically a "one hole gun". Almost finished. I'm waiting on alternate mainsprings, which largely are the recoil spring in this design. It needs a lighter spring to lock back with Eley's light target loads. Trigger on this one is "illegal" 2lbs even. I'll put a Clark "mainspring housing adjustment" screw in should I ever decide to go back to bullseye shooting.

Pima Pistol Club sounds pretty high class, I suspect it's the good stuff.

I've often wanted to buy a real basic cheap but solid base 1911 and build it a little at a time to acheive what I want. Just to accomplish like you said some shade tree gunsmithing skill on the 1911 platform.
I've had em apart but not adept enough at the tuning and correlation of parts to be very comfy inside one.
Fortunately my Cbob is about as close to perfect as I can imagine a 1911 being, although there are several others I'd like to call my own and play with. The Ruger, the Springer Rangemaster, the MRI, the list goes on and on and now they throw a HK P7 in my path to throw me off course.

After working with Glocks which actually rarely happens just holding a 1911 is a devine pleasure. It truely is.

I kind of put working on triggers in the same category as working on brakes on my car (in the old days), I'll do just about anything to make it go but I hate messing with brakes. While I normally don't got ta stop, I gots to go, brakes are important. I prefer to pay someone else to mess with them hopefully in a successful manner.

Kind of like grandpa, I wanna go peacefully in my sleep not screaming like the others in the car, dang that was a funny one. I'm still laughing...............

I comforted that the Cbob has a good quality trigger and sear as you say. I kind of figured so as they use the big name good guys stuff to build em. Works for me. Safe, sane, (well it is anyhow) and loveable.

Buy the Kimber logo grips and take em out. Find another logo you prefer the same size or larger and your in business.

I don't recall how Kimber attaches theirs but usually they are just a pin, kind of peened over in the back like a rivet. Easy to get out.

If your new pin is larger its a bit more of a challenge but not difficult.

I either epoxy or acra glass my pins in.

I plan to swap out some colt pins for Dan Wesson pins on a set Melissa sent me. They aren't riveted so must be glued somehow. Guess I'll find out hopefully soon. Hoping to save the colt pins as it would be sacrilege to ruin anything Colt. Might end up on a set headed back to Melissa or on one of mine.

the raptor may be the only 1911 where you don't change the grips

I love the look of Raptors, my cousin has one and it just shoots like a champ. I admire the look of the grips on them too but many do find them too agressive. Cling to covering garments, abrasive to skin if no shirt between.
Not sure if they are like checkering where the sharp areas could be toned down with some light sanding.

Personally I'm all about looking cool and would take some discomfort to maintain the cool look but some think I'm a little different too.

Forgive me for sounding like a smart@ss, but you can probably find some grips close enough to the originals on eBay for very little money. That way you could keep your good grips pristine and shoot the heqq out of it any time you liked. ;)

It came with some wood colt medallion grips that I will definitely use for that purpose I just like the pearl look. A bit fancy for some people but I've wanted a set up like this one for a few years now.

Me, I'm stuck on wood and have some genuine Bawanna Super Thins on my pride and joy CBOB to prove it. Most people say nice things about my grips, but they may just be polite. It puffs up my head a little, but in reality, I could care less. Getting old and crotchety has a positive side too. :D

If those people are bringing up the grip comments on their own I would assume they're genuine or if they didn't like them they would just not say anything at all. I've heard those grips are made with sweat and love.

I'll be standing by. Hopefully in about 3 weeks I'll have these weddings done and over with and get back to a semi normal life and hopefully the sawdust will fly.

Those pearl grips are probably synthetic and most likely wouldn't crack but of course I can't know that for sure, I'd hate to tell you your safe and then have them crack.

Pattons were indeed ivory which is in some cases even more brittle and subject to cracking.

Give me some time and I can build ya some range grips that you won't be ashamed of I'm sure.

He's The Man, alright! I am dreaming about a S&W 1911SC E-Series (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_785108_-1_770151_757752_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y), with the Scandium Alloy frame that brings the empty weight under 30 ounces, and loaded with other features including the all important right side safety lever for lefties like me. I saw a new one on sale at GUNSAMERICA for $775. But it will be quite a while before I can plunk that kind of money down.

I like the thin grip on a single-stack 1911, but I'll still need the Bawanna Super Thins to make it fit my very small, crippled hands better. My hands are halfway paralyzed, as well as my wrists, forearms, feet and legs because of a slowly progressive hereditary neuropathy. That is why I was drawn to the simplicity of Kahr pistols. But you guys have made me fall in love with the venerable 1911!

That's the first gun I've ever bought without any plans to shoot. I had my second son born earlier this year. When he's of proper age, this will be his. He'll have a 1911-2011 anniversary model from the year he was born, 2011. Pretty damn cool if you ask me. :) I'll actually have a story to share about this gun sometime soon. :cool: For now, here's the engraving on the other side:

Probably just me but I never get tired of looking at 1911's.

The man who supervises our school dist bus barn is stopping by my office today to show me his new Ruger SR1911 and his Gunsite Colt. I'm drooling already. I kind of hope I don't like it since he said the place he got it has another one. I want one really bad but I'm trying to act grown up ya know?

He's perfect example of how real warriors tend to stay very low profile. I've known him for a few years, not close or anything but work related. I found out a week ago he was a seal from 69-94. Sure glad I didn't piss him off.

He instructs sometimes at Gunsite too. I plan to be very polite.

I picked up a 2011 1911 to celebrate the designs 100th which also was my 50th anniversary of being trained on one at the Army MP school. After the Army career I drifted away from 1911s with a second career carrying SIGs. Thought I would shoot the DW and relegate it to the safe to bring out ever so often for show and tell. And then I shot it again, and again...and again. So, my two SIG P220s are in the safe and I ordered a Guardian for carry. They were just the way I wanted mine to end up, except I like black grips on a carry gun so I think I'll switch the grips when my Guardian gets here next week. One to shoot and shoot and one to shoot and carry. Here's my V-Bob.

Greg, you are joking about that Essex frame/slide .45 (first pic) as being ugly right? That is one of the jokes within a joke..right? IMHO that .45 rocks. It looks like it is worn into someone's hand and utilitarian like a hammer. Outstanding.

I hope there are some out there that like old school stuff. I did all these in the late 70s into the 80s. I still own and use them. They may not be as pretty and precise as cnc machined stuff but I can proudly say that I mostly did them by hand

This is a complete .22 Colt Ace that I currently use in steel plate matcheS. I customized this one in the late 70s when I used it to practice for IPSC matches. The grip safety is a piss poor fit because back then there was only one commercial source for grip safeties (Safari Arms) which had a different radius cut then what's used now. That safety also applied downward pressure to the web of your hand. I later found high ride safeties for this cut made by king Gun Works (now out of busines)

Here's another conversion unit. It's a slide that fits onto a 1911 frame and shoots .177 pellets. They were made in the 70s, in Germany and sold by Crossman. It's really accurate.

In the early 80s, after I started competing in Ipsc matches I mostly customized this one. After I did all the checkering, Barsto barrel fitting, etc. I sent the frame and slide out to Behlert Precision (now out of business) to install the Bomar sight, serrate the top of the slide, and cut a dovetail for the front sight and to do a complete hard chrome.

Then compensators were discovered (LOL) With some reservations about the practical being taken out of practical pistol shooting I had to build one. So I bought a Para-Ordnance gunsmith frame and a Colt Govt. slide. Again after doing all the frame work, I sent it all to Behlert Precision to have them cut 1/2" off the slide, install a Bomar sight, dove tail front, dual port/chamber comp, and hard chrome it. I drew the line when competitors started to put optics on.

Back then my 14 yr. old son wanted to compete, so I built this Springfield frame with a Colt Gold Cup Slide, with a Barsto barrel for him. He lost interest fast once he discovered girls. I never did put a final finish on it. The installation of the Bomar rear sight is unique. The dove tail is cut off and the base is silver soldered to the slide. There were a few smiths out there that did this

And finally, I think, is this one I built for my wife. It's done on an older military issue Remington Rand pistol (please no remarks). She doesn't like checkering or hard chroming. So I stippled it, installed a Wilson barrel, etc. and had it matte finished. She doesn't carry it, she just shoots it. She carries either a tricked out K9 or Pm9. It was her bedroom night stand gun until I got her a reduced grip Glock 17

LOL, I've been criticized in the past about doing this work on what is now considered a collectible pistol.
"How could you destroy that pistol ?"
"I would have traded you another 1911 for it if you hadn't customized it"

Back when I did the work I thought military pistols were still plentiful. I guess I was wrong. Some of the older big name smiths were building on them. I guess that's why the original ones dried up.
The only thing is on the older 1911s the slides were softer, but that's no big deal. Tightening the slide to frame fit on my other 1911s was a chore. On the softer Remington it was a breeze and it's held it's tightness in over 1000 rounds
I can't figure out what you, gb6491 and others like about my wife's pistol. Are you all just being nice to her?

A little. I did not want to modify either the barrel or the slide, so I confined my fitting to removing a small amount of material from the outside of the bushing itself. It is still a little harder than average to remove from the slide because I wanted it to be a tight as possible.

For the barrel to bushing fit, you can order a bushing that is exactly 0.001" larger than your barrel and not have to touch the moveable bushing itself, or at least I was able to. Depends on your barrel, I suspect.

This pistol makes me smile every time it goes to the range. :D

I thought I'd pitch my Combat Master since it's the smallest 1911 I've seen. It has a 3.5 inch barrel but the gun is the same length as my Kimber and STI 3 inchers. As you can see the grip is considerable shorter than either and is almost a two finger grip, even for my smallish hands. The flush mags hold six 45 ACP's. The pistol was having an ejection problem, but after a trip to a Detonics smith, it's running fine. He tuned the extractor, installed a new slide stop, and replaced the followers and springs in the thirty year old mags. I carry it occasionally but being an all SS gun it's my heaviest pistol at thirty-one ozs.

Turning the bushing is usually the way to fit it . If you want to loosen it a bit try making a paste of tooth powder, apply and turn. If it's really tight you could try some really fine valve lapping compound.

I've been using two of them since they first came out, one in my carry commander that only gets shot for practice, fortunately so far.

I had to get this bushing for it because I ordered a 4 1/4" barrel from Briley, and what they did was cut a 5" barrel down to length without leaving any relief on the barrel to clear a solid bushing when the barrel tipped down. The other is on my IPSC competition gun that's seen thousands of rounds. The fitted slide to frame has loosened up but the bronze insert is still the same diameter

Funny thing is that neither of the bronze inserts have worn down, but I've seen solid bushings loosen up the barrel to bushing fit. I think it's because if there isn't enough barrel relief just behind the muzzle the barrel rubs against the bushing as the barrel tips down

Hey, I got one of those. I had mine Parkerized a few years ago, and have the stainless accents, and rubber grips. Like you said it works. I've actually won many a range bet with mine. When I get some more time (maybe Friday ish) I'll see about posting up some pics of that and my Commander. I may also see about borrowing a real piece of history that my uncle has custody of right now. (1911 transitional model, look them up)

I am going to go out and shoot a few rounds this weekend as well, finally get more then one day off with the holiday. I still have the stock grips stashed away, but they are not the classic looking rubber ones. They are more like harder plastic and are formed around the mag release and up to the beaver tail on the ejection side. The Llama may not be the sexiest date at the ball, but this one has treated me good. They take a beating on the net and I can't join that crowd because this sidearm has been a joy to own. I'll look up that .45 your going to take out Friday and check it out. Have fun this weekend and enjoy your holiday. By the way, I have been thinking about having the frame finished again there are some worn areas were the stock grips marked and I did put a small idiot mark on it as well (you can see it in the pic). Photography is another hobby of mine, but I'm not nearly as good at shooting a camera and I am a gun. I got it for such a great deal brand new. I was just lucky it was such a great looking gun as well! And for sure, on one hand I feel very comfortable carrying it. On the other hand I don't. Compared to my PM9, I'm VERY aware it's there. :D

Depends on how you want to finish it. If you Parkerize, then watch the extractor (the hook tends to break off) parts are out there for it, but you have to look. It shouldn't cost any more to do the Llama than any other gun, it also takes down like any other 1911, with the exception of the plunger tube (screws to frame instead of being staked or cast with the frame). I also recommend highly getting a steel plunger tube instead of the plastic one. Some parts are not MILSPEC, but a little fitting can make them work. Your call on the finish, I had mine Parkerized because I had an in at the community college that I was near at the time, and they needed at least three guns to do a run. I gave them two, and could have a third, it cost me about $120 if I remember right. I used to use cold blue for the touch ups, but it never did match quite right.

I just replaced the front sight on my Springer "1990's Editon" (precursor to the current Mil-Spec model). For those that might not know, Springfield Armory uses a proprietary cut (and corresponding tenon) for their slides that have stake on front sights. I don't know if Springfield will sell you the part or if you have to send your slide in for them to do the install, but alternatively, Fusion sells a sight with a correct tenon for the SA cut. The sight is well made and required little fitting to install on my gun:

I have totally enjoyed looking at all the beautiful 1911 pix. I recently purchased my first 1911, a Metro Arms American Classic II Commander. Put on some Double Diamond Cocobolo Slim Grips for easier grip control for me. I see more 1911's in my future for sure. Here is my new 1911. :D

All I've done so far is change the grips, extended slide lock & thumb safety were standard. I think I'm going to really enjoy the 1911 platform. My first venture into the 1911's, and this will be an enjoyable experience. :D

Thx Deano. Yes, it is the Kim Pro mag with the flat plate base. I wasn't sure about the grips when I ordered them, but the more I look, the more I like. :D

Gb and Bawanna! Yep love the old wide spur on a 1911. I like the moded 1911 to 1911a1. Had one issued to me in navy. It was made in 1918 if I rem and they did a arsenal refinish. Arched new trigger but kept the safety. Dang now I gotta look this up. Haha I'll be back got something mixed up in my mind.

Ok they only replaced trigger, MSH, sights, and opened the ejection port a bit. It shot great, tight n a 5-6 lb trigger pull.

That's it. I hated to turn it back in almost lost it in the field. Wink! But oh well!

So I've had this thread on my list to poke thru for awhile. Finally got around to it. As a 1911 watcher and non-owner, all the picts are really cool. I don't even own a .45, but these make me want to go shopping.

As far as this thread though, if I won the lottery tomorrow and could offer a ridiculous sum of money to convince somebody here to sell something I found cool. These two would be a toss up for me.

gb6491's Essex frame...something about the wear on it and his claim about how it shoots just has me wanting to take possession of it.
