Stopped by the local shop yesterday and there sat a black K9 for $329.
I gave it a once over: saw it was very dry, that the front sight had a very, very slight wiggle, a little plum color to the frame, and that there were some assorted bumps and bruises on it. I wasn't up to speed on serial number/manufacture dates, but saw that it didn't have the stepped frame. Anyway, I decided to adopt it (I'm a soft touch for strays). I have to admit that I did abuse the poor beast by running a box and a half of ball through it dry (nary a hiccup) before putting it on the leash and taking it home. Once home, I looked up the serial number (AD0000X) and figure it's late 95/early 96 vintage. Some touch up blue confirmed it's all junkyard mean, carbon steel and a little lube (inside and out) worked wonders as well. A dab of Loctite on it's snout to tighten up the sight and all is well with the new member of the family.
Here it is right after getting home:

After a little cleanup (better background and lighting don't hurt either:)):

u did well my friend, gun for its age looks really new. a carbon blue steel with any use at all and that age should show alot of "just" wear. this gun doesn't. the price is definitely right to..

I would bet also that the gun has the nice Rubber grips on it to.:33:

Greg; What do you use as "touch up blue"?

Congrats, professor!! Awesome find at an awesome price - I wish I could find a deal like that around here for under $500. And she even cleaned up nice! If you get bored with it and are looking for a buyer, let me know, K9 is high on my list.

Thanks all, I'm more than pleased with the new pup :D

Greg; What do you use as "touch up blue"?
Oxpho-Blue or Dicropan T-4 (sometimes a combination of both) from Brownells. Oxpho-Blue is the more durable. Dicropan will give a darker color. They are no substitute for a complete refinish (hot or rust blue), but work fine for touch up and are easy to redo as needed.

Awesome! And . . . that looks like much more fun than raking mesquite bean pods up out of the gravel. ;)

The same model as my first Kahr. Rock solid reliability, a very dependable firearm. Congrats on a nice deal.

Here's my very used and somewhat abused carbon steel K9...

Nice find!

My Ruger P89 frame turned that plum color, and it has been taken well care of for the last 15 years.

Nice looking gun but I bet that bad boy will rust just looking at it in this weather.

Hey Greg, did you happen to try those samples I sent you on that new adoption? My K40 I'm sure is early, maybe, just maybe the frame will be different?

I'd sure like to get these things figured out.

I've had pretty good fortune in regards to carbon steel and rust, but I've also got some stainless steel Kahrs for really bad days.

Bawanna,
The samples are headed back and some photos of the frame are in an email sent this A.M.

So they didn't fit that either? Or they were gone before this stray found a home?

Bawanna,
I've only the the K9 in an all steel Kahr. I probably wasn't clear about that when I posted the photo of it with an E9 slide installed. Sorry.

Greg

Your usually pretty clear, I'm just sometimes a little slow to grasp complex ideas. That makes good sense even to me now. So you got one frame, 2 top ends. I'm kind of like a bottle of ketchup that finally bust loose and dumps all over your burger. I ain't nuts about ketchup or pizza sauce for what tiny little bit that might be worth.

I noticed in your picture considerable wear on the trigger bar, perhaps not wear but worn shiney. Apparently the grip must provide considerable support to keep that thing in place. I've never had issues and have never put a metal insert into my grips but I can see where it might be a good thing especially in softer woods.
