Obama just nominated Caitlin Halligan to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals - one level down from the Supreme Court. Halligan has said "handgun manufacturers [should be] held liable for criminal acts [by others] committed with handguns." That of course would bankrupt the firearms industry.

Both Heller and McDonald were decided in the Supreme Court by only one vote. A one person swing and all gun decisions could easily go the other way. The POTUS almost always nominates SCOTUS members from the appellate court level.
