My K9 suffered the same problem. I used a product called Innosoft B570 to remove the rust and then just tonight applied Renaissance Wax to protect against further corrosion.

I pulled the grips off and also have what appears to be pitting, orange spots beneath them. I'll try the naval on a small area under the grips first to see what happens.
