when I was heavy into dove hunting back in my home state I used to reload my 12 gauge with #9 shot and I never told anyone what I had in it. I was just deadly on doves, amazing. People actualy thought I could really shoot. Most I hunted with used 7.5 shot. I HAD OVER DOUBLE the amount of shot coming out the end of my barrel as they did. oh yes quantity helps--sometimes..
. My PM9 has over 40,000+ rounds through it, and runs much better than an illegal trying to get across our border

I personally like slugs for SD.
I know some think that's weird.

Federal's 12 Gauge Tactical® TruBall® Rifled Slug provides an amazing accuracy improvement for smooth-bore shotguns.

It hits like a cannon ball too!

Whatever you decide, pattern it yourself at the distances you expect (and hopefully never) use it at. My 11-87 shoots a nice 6" pattern at 20' with cheapo buckshot, but one holes at the same distance with newer tactical buck. Good to know what it will do.

Yeah a pattern board is good to use here. When I picked up a 20ga single shot for my Son to use as an apartment SD gun we did this. The gun was sawed off and the stock shortened by a previous owner. In his apartment we found the longest shot possible was about 15ft. On th patten board we found it would put every pellet from a 7/8oz load of #8 shot inside a 9" round target. This from a gun with NO choke. SD buckshot loads were even tighter.
Figure how you plan to use it and what your max distance is expected to be and go try. A little butcher paper and sharpied point of aim will tell you what you need to know.
    Good luck.

    Tactical® TruBall® Rifled Slug

Federal's Tactical® TruBall® Rifled Slug provides an amazing accuracy improvement for smoothbore shotguns.
The unique TruBall system locks the components together, centering the slug in the barrel.
This unique system promotes clean separation of components after muzzle exit to ensure greater down-range accuracy.
TruBall is capable of 2" groups at 50-yards—more like what you'd expect of sabot slugs shot from a rifled barrel.
Federal Tactical Slugs also feature an all brass head for improved extraction and ejection and a blue hull for easy visual identification.
The TruBall Rifled Slug ushers in a new generation of rifled slug systems
and provides the confidence you need in standard police shotguns.

I'm at work and am blocked from gun searches.
There are a variety of slug designs.
So your simple question does not have a simple answer.

I think the Federal Tactical slugs I'm recommending are fine.
But I'd verify with an email with specifics to Federal.
Also I'ma crazy )(*()*_ and showed the full power version.
There's a low recoil flavor better suited for home defense.

Actually, any slug will over penetrate for home defense.
A low recoil tactical 00 buck would be the smart choice.

    Do as I say not as I do;
there may be something horribly wrong with me - LOL!

Slugs should be shot from a Cylinder/Improved cylinder bore, never from tighter chokes as the overpressure affects accuracy and may damage your gun.
I saw a Full choke BBL that had fired a saboted slug back in 1988/89 and it had swelled/split the BBL about four inches from the chamber. It was an older SKB 12ga so it was a well made BBL. The guy remarked that the round key-holed the target at 40yds.
Newer loadings may have adjusted for this but don't bet on it. My 20ga Mossy pistol grip (Cyl Bore) hit a B-27 target center mass at 100yds once.
Of course I had quite the hold over going on...
