Well I met a white haired 60-ish Georgia Highway Patrolman who must disagree with you. He used to (maybe still does) patrol the northern side of I-285 in Atlanta with a not too great looking motor, a radar gun and a permanent frown on his face. Must have committed a huge political faux paux and got permanently assigned to that duty. I got a speeding ticket from him once when I was just trying to get out of the way of an aggressive driver who was trying to climb up my tail pipe, who then sped on down the road much faster than I was going. But I got caught by the radar gun. No point trying to explain it to him, though. He was the angriest, most disagreeable police officer I ever met.
    Very interesting...

Buummer. In most depts the motor jocks main purpose is escorts and to write as many tickets as possible. I know more than one dept that has minimum daily contact goals.

That is the way we are set up. We don't have quotas, we have performance standards

As much as I would have loved to be a motor officer, it wasn't in the cards. My agency doesn't have bikes. Oh well, the only dream job I can't fulfill. I did get to work as a K-9 officer for 6 years. That will probably be the favorite part of my career.

Many years ago when I worked in a tool warehouse in Seattle a Motor officer turned into the little street our loading dock was on to make a U turn. There was gravel and loose dirt and he lost it and it fell over. I happened to see it so I jumped off the dock and ran over and helped him get it upright.
At first he was a little put out but then he realized I was just trying to help and wasn't questioning his man hood trying to right that heavy thing.

It paid off in spades and many of the motor officers had lunch at the little cafe across the street where I went frequently too. Got invited to sit with them many times and even a free lunch from time to time.

Got me out of a ticket once too.

One (actually most) of the departments I'm applying to doesn't have a motor unit, but as I am just getting started we can only see what happens. FYI, for those that are going to ask, we take the TCLEOSE test on the 27'th of this month. Until then, it is all test and review, so we're pretty well done.

That notch in the rail is supposed to be there

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
