Whoever uses an auto for self-defense should be able to rack it forcibly and clear malfunctions. It takes more than just barely being able to get ONE round into the chamber. Jams are most common when trying to chamber a round, especially if you wait until the last moment.
It's very important to make sure the top round is all the way to the rear in the magazine, especially if you carry +1, as you should. Top off the mag and make sure that top round is fully to the rear. That should give you AT LEAST TWO shots.
