He also had a bit of luck on his side. During the intro the bad guy always shot first but couldn't hit squat. There's no truth to the rumor that the part of the bad guy was played by Jocko. Matt always drilled him center mass and Jocko bears no scars.

I understand that before Arness was cast, Don Knots was first offered the role of Matt Dillon. Don refused it on the grounds they would only allow him to carry one bullet. He accepted the next, similar role, and history was made. True story... I think.

BTW, I think Matt's horse wore out and had to be shot at around 8 yr. old, but Chester's horse lived to a ripe old age of 29. Festus' horse is still alive today.
