Thread: Removing slide stop pin with empty mag inserted

Default Removing slide stop pin with empty mag inserted

Any reason why I shouldn't remove the slide stop pin with an empty magazine inserted? It is a heck of a lot easier this way. I watched the YouTube video on this trick and it sure does work. I can easily press it out as opposed to having to tap it out with an empty magazine well. I can't see it hurting anything myself. Thoughts? Thanks all!

Been doing it that way for years. Makes it much easier and I have never had a problem. Other opinions?

Don't have much problem getting mine out, but I'm gonna give it a try. Never thought of it before, was always taught to pull the mag when cleaning.

Great idea, since I'm new to Kahr firearms (picked a PM 9 last Friday and could not stop shooting! 375 rounds so far) I appreciate new ideas.

They may specify disassembly with the magazine removed as a safety precaution. The slide pin on mine doesn't want to budge unless I have the empty magazine inserted. Then I can just press it out using the corner of my workbench. Can anyone answer this...what happens to the slide release when an empty mag is inserted that makes it so much easier to remove? The retainer spring has less tension on the pin? I'm on vacation so don't have mine to look at right now. Otherwise I'd play around with it myself. Just curious.

I used to have to do my PM45 as Mike just said, but I very recently tried the method demonstrated on the Kahr YouTube video.

Doing this I can control the slide easily and on every pistol I tried the pin is EASILY pushed out using my weak hand finger and easily fully removed after it protrudes far enough.

"K" series slide stops have a small groove/notch cut on top of the pin. The slide stop spring sits in this to help retain the stop. My guess is that an empty magazine lifts the stop causing the pin to rotate. This changes the relationship of the spring and the groove on the pin...the spring is no longer contacting the groove full length. As such, it takes less effort to push the stop pin out from under the spring.

I'm telling you there are lots of talented folks on this forum.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.
