I still blame part on most mom's working. And pretty much the second generation of working moms who learned nothing from their moms. I coached baseball and little bit of basketball as my kids grew up and many parents used that as a time to get shed of little Johnny so they could do I know not what. No guidance, some seldom attended games, some were habitually late picking kids up and disappointed when there wasn't a practice or game that fit their schedule.
Usually trouble makers when they did attend games.
But mostly I blame it on the school of positive reinforcement. Thank you Billy for not kicking the crap out of Johnny, now here's some Oreo's, group hug and lets have recess.
My wife stayed home with the kids, gradually went back to work as their school hours allowed. When they were home, she was home. I don't think they ever saw a non family babysitter in their whole life and didn't get left even with parents until they were 3 or 4.
Interesting story loosely related. When my oldest son was little my wife worked for a preschool and he enrolled since she worked there. He was kind of a baby huey for his age group, rather BIG. I built some storage units for the school to hang up their coats and what not and had installed them and was just hanging around watching.
Well all the kids were in this room basically just free for all playing with different toys. My son picked up a toy and was playing when another boy came over and grabbed it out of his hands. He got a rather puzzled look but just grabbed another toy and kept on. Well the same kid came over and grabbed that toy, again a 2nd puzzled look but just grabbed yet a 3rd toy.
Well you guessed it, same kid comes over and grabs that third toy. Son looked over at me with a pleading look on his face and I just nodded. Son just pushed the kid rather firmly in the chest knocking him on his backside and of course he started bawling his eyes out (which I rather enjoyed to be honest).
Well of course the teacher runs over and grabs my son by the ear and starts to scold him for being mean, at about the same instant I grabbed the teacher by her ear and explained the true goings on. Apparently I had good credibility or she was just afraid but no punishment for my son and very little if any for the little delinquent who's probably a congressional aid for Pelosi or something by now.
Not sure exactly how this relates but I felt like telling this true story.
In Memory of Paul "Dietrich" Stines.
Dad: Say something nice to your cousin Shirley
Dietrich: For a fat girl you sure don't sweat much.
Cue sound of Head slap.
