The Real ID act is a Federal push to enhance the reliability of identification documents used for some purposes, primarily travel. It sets standards akin to Passports for other identification to be accepted, such as verification of personal data like birth, citizenship, residence, etc, as well as document dublication/forgery prevention measures. States do not have to comply with these enhanced measures, and most didn't, but if they don't their DLs and ID cards will not be accepted for affected Federal purposes.

Side notes...acceptable identification for voting purposes is under state purview, not federal.

Once Real ID is in place nationwide we will have no choice as that will be all that there is.

When I recently renewed my DL there was a deep line for Real ID. Hadn't heard of it our would have gotten it on my DL. Requires birth certificate, utility bill and bunch of other stuff. Since it's CA, I might be able to get it over the phone.... just saying.

Real ID is in place nationwide. Other than states that have completely bundled it into their DLs, you don't have to get one if you don't need it for the Fed defined purposes. Also should note, if you have a passport you're already Real ID compliant and a passport is, or should be, acceptable proof of birth and citizenship when applying for other forms of ID.

Personally, whiile I still wish for the old days and ways, times being what they are I'm understand the need for and am a supporter of Real ID for the Act's stated uses and purpose.
