    Default Question: PM45 Chipped?

**Update 2/29/2020: Short range session had zero problems with various FMJ and Speer GD SB.

Hello all, could you all please tell me if this is a mod and if I should replace the barrel or not? I picked up a used PM45 and did a field strip to clean and lube before I test it out at the range this weekend. I noticed that the barrel hood had a chip or was modified or something. I was wondering if this is normal for some owners or if they've seen this before (e.g. to aid in ejection). I was planning on taking it to the range over the weekend as is.

If this is a functional mod, think I can clean it up, but just wanted to verify. I'm hoping it isn't that much different in handling than my CW45. Ejection seems fine with Snap Caps. Pics below:

If you are referring to the area that the red arrow points to, then that is fairly common wear. You can leave it as is (it doesn't really affect anything) or smooth it down. I've done the latter on my guns.

The blue arrow points to a pocket on the barrel hood that is there by design; it helps facilitate the ejection of live rounds.

    Regards,
    Greg

I just checked, my barrels are not "scooped" out like that but ground at an angle right there.

I concur with Greg, I've seen that before several times. I'll have to check mine to see what it looks like.

It's more commonly found on the 40 and 45 guns, but even some of those don't have it.
    Here are two CW45 barrels:

I've no idea why some come with it and others don't.

If your guns eject live rounds easily, then there is no need for it. If they don't, it's not hard to do with a Dremel tool.

Thank you all for the info. I don't mind the wear as long as it is normal (I assumed the "scoop" was factory). I'm pretty excited to test this puppy out this weekend!

You’re going to like it. Very mild recoil for such a small .45.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

Just pulled my barrel and it looks like the barrel on the left in Gregs photo. Just a tiny bit of a couple dings on the edge, barely noticeable. Never looked at it that close before.

Just a quick update... Rushed the range tests, but I had no issues. I do really like it. As a side note, this thread coincides with my other thread on picking up this model used: http://www.kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?33209-Used-PM45-anything-to-watch-out-for-(updated).
