When discussing the cost of the sport, I was informed that the average life of a precision rifle barrel is only 5 seconds!

Maybe they're adding up all the milliseconds that a bullet spends in the barrel to get the 5 seconds? That would be my best guess. Not sure how long it takes a bullet to travel 24-26" down the barrel but it isn't very long.
Just my speculation.
That's correct Ken. 5 seconds probably represents about 6,000 rounds or more.
