CM45 slide won't stay open unless magazine is inserted

New CM45 owner, Tried to find a sticky explaining this but is it normal that the slide won't stay open unless a mag is inserted into the well? Seems like a defect and a unsafe operation if I want to check to see if the gun is cleared of all rounds

Are you pushing up the slide lock lever with the slide back? It won't stay back without a mag if you don't.

Thank you! I was trying to push the slide lock lever before pulling the slide back. It's also brand new so the slide is rather stiff.
