I assume that the placement of the "E" and the "W" is what's being questioned?

That represents a standard "Compass Rose" of a Surveyor's compass .... back in the "old days". This was on the face of the compass, with the free "floating" magnetized needle centered above it in the case. When the compass body was turned to point a specific direction, the needle remained pointed to the North and the direction that the compass body was pointed (towards the target) could be read on the compass rose. On most true surveyor grade instruments, the circular case had finely engraved marks around the entire circumference of the case face so that a more precise reading could be made.

So, when it comes to 500 year old technology she probably knows where she is after all.

Only thing I can see it that's a whole lot of needle pokes, and I'm plumb skeered of them needle pokes. Last shot I got I didn't even get a lollipop. *****.

Thank you for that explanation. In my feeble recently retired brain I had been trying to figure that out for about a year when compared to the type compass where the whole N/E/S/W would spin around. Son #2 went through land navigation training and terrain map reading last year and we were talking about compass reading.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

I definitely understand the" recently retired feeble brain" thing ... I can certainly relate to that myself. As much as I tried to fight against it, I had to officially retire on April 1 and still can't accept it - and I won't even turn 70 until next month.

Yeah, the whole surveying instrument thing is pretty darned interesting. That chick is either a surveyor herself, married to a surveyor or trying to bait one of us wonderful, studly surveyors into a ron-dee-voo

I hate to say it, but I lived in NJ for eight years. One of my co-workers drove limos on the weekend to make extra cash. He once drove Robin Williams from New York to Atlantic City. He said he laughed the entire trip. Robin Williams in person was exactly like him on stage.
