Thread: What is this part on a P380 called?

Default What is this part on a P380 called?

    What does it do?

Why does it not show with a part number in the frame parts diagram?

    Photo of part here? https://www.dropbox.com/s/4rvg0el4wo...rPart.jpg?dl=0

    Thanks!

Looks like the trigger bar to me. It's in the frame with the trigger, ejector, cocking cam etc. Not part of the slide.

After some adjustment to your image, I'd guess that is a P380 CA with a magazine disconnect.

If so, that part is the magazine disconnect. It disconnects the trigger bar from the cocking cam when there is no magazine in the gun.
    It's listed here: https://shopkahrfirearmsgroup.com/ma...ci-071p38ca-q/ and https://shopkahrfirearmsgroup.com/pa...rame-assembly/

Aww, good eye Greg, I thought it looked strange. It's actually separate from the trigger bar. Never seen one in the wild before.

Awesome job Super Moderator! Winna' winna' chicken dinner!

Now, please take a look at the problem I am having with the 'Magazine disconnect'. Here is my previous post as I still have the problem.

On reassembly the slide was stopped by the magazine disconnect (out of position?). The magazine disconnect rests almost even with the top of the frame. Maybe I need to push harder, but it wasn't a problem on 10 previous occasions when I disassemble/reassembled. I can use a small screw driver to depress the, spring loaded magazine disconnect, to pass under the contact point on the frame to reassemble, but again I never had to do that before.

The top of the magazine disconnect itself is rough and abraded at the top forward edge where the bend is located. The link below will take you to the photos, I hope it works. You may need to 'unzip' the photo(s) to view the pics http://www.dropbox.com/s/rtct5sspmy6...0pics.zip?dl=0

Let me know if you can't get the idea from the pics. Thanks gb6491 for your help!

I don't own (nor have I handled) a Kahr with the magazine disconnect, please keep that in mind as I write the following (just guesswork on my part):

It seems to me that the magazine disconnect should be held down by the magazine disconnector spring when there is no magazine in the gun. This in turn would hold the trigger bar down and out of contact with the cocking cam.

That it feels to you like the magazine disconnect is spring loaded when you push down on it suggest to me that you are feeling the trigger bar spring bias (which pushes up on the trigger bar which in turn would push up on the disconnector).

I would think that the downward bias of the disconnector spring should be of sufficient force to almost completely eliminate any feel of upward bias from the trigger bar spring.

It wouldn't hurt to check that the magazine disconnector spring is properly in place and undamaged.

BTW, with the gun as shown in your photo that I posted, if you pull the trigger does the cocking cam move?

    Greg

Thanks Greg. 1. Why doesn't the parts diagram or parts list show a magazine disconnect spring? Where would I look to find it if it is present or broken? Regarding the cocking cam, yes it moves. Also, I noticed that the extractor which should be protruding outward when the barrel is loaded to act as a 2nd chambered round indicator is no longer working (protruding). Does that help you with helping me?>

First, your gun is not operating correctly. Without a magazine in place, the the disconnector should be pushing the trigger bar out of contact with the cocking cam. You should not see the cocking cam moving when pulling the trigger.

I'm not privy to any information about Kahr manuals and lists beyond what the next person knows. Your guess is as good as mine as to why the parts are not shown in a diagram.

So let me make a few more guesses:
The area to the rear of the magazine well (behind the magazine) is solid in my P380. I'm guessing it is not on your P380. I would think there is an area made for the spring and maybe part of the disconnector.

Looking at this photo of a P380 CA, there is a pin on the grip that is not present on my P380.

I imagine this pin is there to anchor one end of the magazine disconnector spring...possibly the one I've drawn a green area to in the following photo.

If I'm right about that then the end with a red arrow probably connects here on the disconnector (another guess).

Hopefully, your issue is that the spring disconnected and you can put it back in place without needing to disassemble the gun.

If it's something else, I'm willing to continue with you.

As to the extractor: on my P380 it is flush with the slide when a round is chambered and recessed when not.

    Regards,
    Greg

    Greg,

You could school the gunsmith/experts at Kahr. Yeah, you are that good. Between the photos you attached showing the parts involved and a clear description of the problem at hand...you nailed it! It is exactly as you said. I called Kahr and explained my problem to them and they said almost word for word what you identified as the problem. They want me to send the P380 back to them completely on their dime.

    Bill
PS: "I'm guessing" "I'd guess" "If I am right" "I would think" "Just guess work on my part" "It seems to me" .........is total BS and total modesty of your knowledge!

I removed the slide and looked in the space (only on Cali models) at the rear end of the open end of the grip. On this model, only, the partitioned space in the grip compartment holds a cross-wise small pin to act as an anchor for the magazine disconnect spring (the pin goes through the round end of the spring). I used a small screw driver to make contact with the spring end on the pin AND COULD EASILY slide it back and forth. ie. No tension on it.

The other end (with the hook) attaches to the magazine disconnect and accessible by removing the side plate to inspect and/or replace. I decided against tackling it myself and will send the gun into Kahr.

I believe this broken or disconnected spring issue may be rare, however I might think this would make a good 'sticky' to identify effects of a broken spring. Kahr thought is will show as broken versus disconnected as they have dealt with this before. Lastly besides the 'Thanks again' I mentioned to Kahr the lack of thier P380 parts diagram missing an illustration of the pin, spring and connection to both the pin and magazine disconnect. The Kahr rep said he will pass that along.

FYI: After calling Kahr and speaking to a tech about this problem and others, including a broken magazine disconnect spring only after maybe 500 rounds, and FTF, Kahr requested that I send my P380 to them for repair. I sent it on their dime last week with a turn around of 3-4 weeks. I sincerely hope that I don't need to put the required 200 rounds or so as another break-in.
