Thanks, John. I was trying to figure out where to post my range trip with my newest acquisition today... my new-to-me Springfield XD45 Tactical... like new and faultless... in performance... so far. I WOULD have had to put it in the General Discussion area.

I had been wanting a "battle pistol" with large capacity magazines for the much talked about WTSHTF-type scenario. The XD45 Tactical definitely fits the bill with a 5" barrel and 13-round magazines... easy to load-ones, too. I love my Kahrs, but 5 to 7-round max capacity magazines aren't my idea of a "battle-ready" pistol.

I took it to the range today for the second time... after receiving my four new 13-round magazines from Ivanhoe Warehouse. That's one great outfit. I ordered four mags from them early on the 29th and received them mid-afternoon on the 31st! They charge $5 for shipping and use USPS Priority... fastest delivery yet... four new Springfield mags delivered for under $100.

I used one of those gun-finish touch-up pens to number the magazines.

I have ordered a set of the Trijicon Hard Duty night sights from Optics Planet... free shipping... and will get a local gun-specialty shop to install them and get a trigger job, too. The Yellow-dot front night sight and u-shaped rear sight might help my aging eyes. I will do a post when I get them installed and tested.

I took the XD45 to the range today and fired 100 MFS 230-gr FMJ and 100 Winchester Value pack 230-gr FMJ, followed by 10 Speer 230-gr Gold Dots.

The gun was pretty boring to shoot... controllable recoil... long sight radius with 3-dot sights... no malfunctions in the first 200 rounds. The first round of 10 Gold Dots failed to chamber. I may have forgotten to tap the back of the magazine in my hand. In any case, I pushed the top bullet back enough to drop the magazine, tapped the back of it into my hand, and re-inserted the mag. The top round chambered easily from slide lock and I fired those 10 Gold Dots without a problem.

If I took the time to aim properly and not jerk the trigger, the bullets went where the sights were aimed. It's definitely a keeper and and will suit its intended purpose... which isn't CCW! I wanted a high-capacity .45 with a 5" barrel and this pistol just feels perfect... much better than the Glock 21's I handled, and at just over $500 out the door, was nicely priced.

I got ahead of myself and just started the picture and video download from this range trip, so I'll post some pix shortly after I get them sorted out and some stills from the video.

First picture is of the first 13-round magazine... no "careful" aiming... 7 yards.

The next is pointing from chest height at 7 yards, rapid fire... pretty much center of mass.

I shot kind of rapid fire at 15 yards... eyes not great for that... 22 rounds with 19 on the paper and 3 just off... letter-sized sheet of paper.

I fired 13 rounds rapid fire with 6 in the 8" circle and 4 on the paper... with three off... one right and one left... and one rang the "bell" and made the target jump all over.:D

I slowed down and fired a magazine at 15 yards... 1 second or so per shot, and managed to get all on the paper... not bad for me.

I did a lot of shooting at multiple targets... didn't take pictures of the better ones, unfortunately, but this definitely wasn't my forté... if I have one!

Next some flash stills.

I keep feeling the same way.... WTSHTF gun... keep thinking FNP-45(usg)... and the KSG shotgun

wyntrout

I really looked at the FNP... especially the Tactical model with the threaded barrel and raised night sights... over $1000, though. This XD45 felt better and really has "light" recoil, plus the long sight radius and I think that the HD Trijicon Night Sights may help me shoot better with the "improved" sights:

I should have these in a few days and get them installed locally. I'll certainly test and post my feelings, etc.

i carry this gun for 40 hrs/week.

it has been a great gun without any hiccups. when my dept first got these, we did have an issue with loose front sights, but they took care of it no problem.

I really like this gun and can't wait to get the HD Trijicons on it to try. I wanted a wider notch at the rear and a more visible front sight... as the new HD's have.

I don't know how old the gun is, but I couldn't find anything but a tiny bit of wear on the front of the barrel. It does have a US serial number... US614xxx.

I saw one of these at a gun show for $509 new the week end before Christmas. I didn't want to jump on that for sure, but I saw this like-new one at the gun store/range where I shoot just a few days later and decided to buy it... $480 plus tax and the NIC... $518 and some change out the door. The dealer wouldn't come down on the price, but added a couple of months to my range membership. It was a good deal for relations with the store/range, too.

Recoil is really mild and I loosely hold the gun without much rise from recoil. I took videos of my shooting today and was surprised how little muzzle rise there was.

My #1 son is looking to get the XD compact in .40S&W.

wyntrout
01-04-2012, 08:26 AM
That's probably what my retired LEO brother had when I shot the .40 S&W for the first time last year. The recoil was no worse than a defensive 9mm +P, which is why I began to consider a gun in that caliber... a new caliber which requires stocking up on MORE AMMO!
It had a smooth trigger and seemed accurate, considering I like to use ALL of the paper on my targets.

The XD is a large gun, but that's what I had in mind for a "battle gun". I don't foresee hiding this one on my person. I have my "cuddly" Kahrs for that. I sure like the 13+1 capacity of the XD45... especially when it's my favorite .45 ammo.

I have some new numbers to consider when I go to the range... six magazines of 13 = 78 rounds ready to go, and if I'm shooting 100 rounds of something, that leaves 22, or 13 + 9 for reloading. I don't always count my shots and sometimes it just shoots and shoots, and.... I really appreciate finding some cheap ammo for this pistol... under $15 a box of 50. I was even considering starting to reload again, but that takes time and a hefty initial investment... again! I had over a box worth of cases in my range bag(box) out of 210 rounds fired. I could have picked up most of the rest in my area.

XD-45 Tactical with a light is my primary carry weapon and has been for the last 4 years. Love it and it is crazy accurate.

Congrats on your new gun.
Looks like your having a good time with your new XD45. XD's are some real fine shooters. I had an XD9sc for about a year and a half and really liked it. Then I got the bug for a new CZ and one of the pistols had to go to make room. When I got the PM9 it kind of took the XD off my hip and onto the shelf. I kept looking and reading about the CZ and the more I looked at it the worse the itch got. I have no regrets, but I can see another XD in my future one day. Just have to figure out which pistol has to go to make room as my little safe can only handle so many.:(

Well, my Trijicon HD night sights just arrived by FedEx. I ordered them on Jan 1st and they shipped on the 2nd, and I got them today.

I was going to criticize the size of the package (the tiles are 12"x12") but maybe there's some regulations concerning radioactive materials to consider:

You gonna hang those on yourself or take em someplace?

I installed a set on my sons and I ended up cutting the front off as they were very tight. Saw several had done that on the net. Installing the new set was not difficult and as I recall the rear sight drove off ok.

Let us know how it goes.

There's a local outfit that does custom work on 1911's, Glocks, and XD's among others, and sights are installed for $35 and a trigger job with your original parts is about $100.

I'm going to try them -- GPI: http://www.gpicustomgunworks.com/ ), rather than take a chance on screwing them up. Under $40 is a good deal since it would cost to ship the slide both ways, and more for the whole gun!

Here are some more pictures. The new sights are taller and I just stuck them in the dove tails for comparison:

Got to going and take these over as soon as I make sure they are open and where they are.

Whyn,
I installed the Springer kit on my XD. Removes most of the pre-travel "take up" and lightens the pull. Nice crisp break. very easy to install, just some fitting. Well worth the $130.

I took the pistol and sights to the gunsmith this afternoon. The owner checked out the XD45 and then took it back and checked with the other smiths in the back. The consensus was that they thought it would be a waste of money for the $130 trigger job. While they could improve the trigger resetting, they thought the pistol was fine as is... so I saved some money. I thought it was pretty nice as is, too.

I'll pick it up Monday and take it to the range. I've "cleared my schedule" for that. :D

Well, I got my XD45 back yesterday(Jan. 12)... new HD NS installed and had the pistol cleaned and adjusted by the gunsmith... $85 total... all I really wanted was the NS installation, but the inspection/cleaning/adjustment or whatever didn't hurt.:)

I'm very happy with the Hard Duty sights. The large rear aperture, added sight radius, and more visible front sight really help my old eyes.

I'm not a "fine aimer"... I don't take a lot of time the line up the sights and when I get the picture I want I don't keep realigning the sights. I'm really pointing the pistol on most of the subsequent sights. Quite often I'll have one flier... maybe two that bracket the desired impact point, then I just point the pistol while mainly looking at the target and trying to keep the same alignment. I shoot quickly, too, with often only a second or less between shots. I can keep most under fist-sized groups at 7 yards and within the 7 1/1" diameter circle targets I tried at 15 yards. I usually feel lucky to keep a magazine-full on a sheet of paper at that range... certainly no 2" or so groups at that range... without a chair and a stable rest, anyhow.

The sights... Trijicon Hard Duty (developed mainly for military and police use) SP101Y... "Y" for yellow and there's an "O" for orange, too.

http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m620/wyntrout/Springfield%20Arms%20XD45%20Tactical%20Pistol/New%20Trijicon%20HD%20Night%20Sights%20SP101Y/TrijiconHDNS1.jpg

Note the larger "U"-shaped rear aperture:

The front of the rear sight is angled to facilitate one-handed racking on clothing or objects:
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m620/wyntrout/Springfield%20Arms%20XD45%20Tactical%20Pistol/New%20Trijicon%20HD%20Night%20Sights%20SP101Y/NewTrijiconHDSP101YNightSightsSideofRear_2451.jpg

The larger yellow surrounded front sight is easy to see:
http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m620/wyntrout/Springfield%20Arms%20XD45%20Tactical%20Pistol/New%20Trijicon%20HD%20Night%20Sights%20SP101Y/NewTrijiconHDSP101YNightSightsFront_2446.jpg

The yellow surround dot will glow brighter than the Tritium with a few seconds charging with a bright light. I used my 150-lumen "tac" light for about 5 seconds, but 10 seconds is nice if you have the time.

With this new-to-me pistol and its 5" barrel, I wanted to see how muzzle flash for the ammo I use compared with my self-defense ammo. I fired 5 rounds of each variant.

I use Short-Barrel Gold Dots for my carry ammo in the PM45 and regular "Duty" Gold Dots in the longer .45's... all 230-grain "regular pressure" loads.

I'll show 4 pictures of the flashes and one of the associated target for each variation of ammo. I forgot to bring some Bonded Remington Golden Sabers... mainly in my S&W 645 for home defense.

I had absolutely no problems with any ammo I tried in this pistol... boringly, NO malfunctions... just a joy to shoot and even more so with these new sights.

I won't win any small group awards, but I'm mainly interested in reliably and quickly getting rounds down range into Center of Mass. My 15-yard targets may seem pretty tame, but it's an improvement for me because I can aim better and point better with these sights.

I got all of my PM45 7-round magazine on the paper at 15 yards a few times, but with much more effort. I didn't do things much differently than with the 7-yard targets... maybe a half second longer "aim" sometimes.

I need to go clean my toys before Wifey gets home... using the dining room table!

She... <sigh>... doesn't like the dining table cluttered... especially with gun parts and cleaning equipment!

I think that the sights shoot to point of aim using the top of the Dot, rather than the top of the post... aligned with the top of the rear sights. The impact did seem to appear under or inline with the dot.

Let me guess.......

You are happy.

Just kidding. I have a XDM .45 with TruGlo TFO's and a Powder River Standard trigger kit. It is without question a "battle gun" It sits ten feet from where I am typing right now. Locked and Loaded.

Enjoy yours.

Thanks, guys. My wife doesn't understand why I "need" so many guns or need to talk about them, etc. on the computer. It's one of my more expensive hobbies, but I enjoy all of this.

I hope that I never NEED any of these weapons, but I feel better that I don't have to worry about trying to get them if I do need them.

This "battle pistol" definitely fills a niche that I worried about. I love my Kahrs, but this pistol has been flawless and with these sights on it, I'm feeling ready for just about anything... but I hope that it's always just a "range toy" and ready for home defense... it's a great shooter... much better in accuracy than I can manage.

I still need a good holster -- gun show next weekend... 21/22 -- and I have magazine holders on order from Tactical Kydex for 2" and 1 1/2" belts... double-mag holders. I want to put together a belt with holders for gear, too, so it's easy to grab, if needed.

This gun is easy to take apart and clean, too... just great, but not for CCW... that's for my Kahrs.

Excellent review and great pics as well.I used to have an XD9 Tactical and I really loved that gun and needless to say it was a very soft shooter. Now that the XDM's have been released you can find great deals on the XD's.

I have an 45 XDM compact, thing feels huge but isn't too bad to carry. I like how it shoots but I hear a trigger job is worth the money.
