I want an AR, and i don't have a lot of money. What is the best bang for your buck for an AR, or what is the most affordable one that you would be willing to purchase?

I know the Smith and Wesson M&P sport is about $800 but are the sacrifices worth the saving?

You can save some money if you are willing to build one. Palmetto State Armory has some good deals and from what I have heard, their stuff is great quality.

They do but only midlength stuff. All their Carbine stuff is sold out

We had a vendor at our gunshow last weekend selling DPMS carbines for $695 each and you pick yours from the stack. Cheapest price I saw at the show.
That was in the DFW area of Texas on May 5th...

There are a lot of good lower priced AR's out now. Check into Olympic Arm's AK's. I've heard good things about those from some folks around here.

Or buy moderate priced AK if you are looking for a SHTF weapon, but those have shot up around $100 more than last year.

I am pricing the build option for my wife, and maybe for some other toys (different calibers and configs for me), and that is the cheapest option, but not by huge amounts, those DPMS guns are pretty close to what I can build for. These days though I haven't been able to get to a gun show for some time, so I have no idea what's in them right now.

Most bang for the buck out there right now has to be the S&W M&P 15 Sport. Dust cover and forward assist are the only thing you loose. I'm no AR expert, but the folks that are seem to think these couple of things are not necessary unless you are going to battle and plan on dragging your AR thru the mud. Even then, there have been some reviews of where exactly that was done, drug thru the grit and grime, and it still functioned.

For under $700 even at the many of the expensive places, going to be hard to beat that price. Trick right now is going to be finding one. GunBroker is the only place I've seen them lately, and occasionally the LGS. Online retail haunts seem to be sold out everywhere.

M&P sport is the best deal if you can find one. Not having the dust cover and forward assit are no big deal

I really like the mid- length over a carbine for 5.56. Much easier on parts and mine has been more reliable.
Either way PSA is good stuff they restock often, just watch them. I would much rather have the PSA than a cheap factory rifle on a budget. If you ever decide to sell or really get into shooting it a lot you will be so glad you did.

There is nothing more frustrating than spending money twice. Save up a couple more months and get the rifle you will be satisfied with.

Deacon speaketh the truth. But thats the kicker. What do you want. Given my AR needs/ wants, i would buy the m&p sport regardless...and spend the extra on ammo or another handgun. But thats me.

If i had unlimited funds, all bets and my position above no longer apply!

If you'd prefer to build, I'd suggest building your lower and finding an assembled upper. That's what I did... Rock River National Match lower and DPMS 20" Hbar upper.

My latest build CMMG lower with Danial Defense lower parts kit. AAC 300 Blackout upper 16" carbine gas system. Knights Armament URX III with a Vortex SPARC. I have right at $1000 in this rifle without the optic.
I have a 16" 5.45x39 that I built for right at $700 and have 12,000 rounds through it.

I recommend building a lower it is really easy and there are all kinds of vids and info out there. Buy a complete upper and a quality bolt and carrier.
