View Full Version : PM45 recoil vs 40 vs 9

I carry a pm9 95% of the time and my Glock 23 the other 5%. I figured I could get a PM40 and that would replace both as my only carry firearm.

Well I stopped at a local gun shop yesterday and they had a pm45 with the laserguard factory installed. I think the price was $740 or so. Sounds a little high, but anyways it felt nice in my hand. My only concern was how much recoil this would have.

Anyone here shoot the 45 and the 9? The 40 and 45? How do they compare? I'm interested in follow up shot accuracy.

Thanks.

I personally find the 45 much more comfortable to shoot than the 40. The 40 is fast so quite a jump off the launch pad.
The 45 is more of a push, a good push but without the crack.

I have a steel 40 and a PM45 and even with the steel gun ported I'd still prefer to shoot the 45 for long periods.

The 40 isn't brutal by any means, just to much flip to me for follow ups in compact guns. Get a full size gun like a T40 or the other large frame guns and it's a different story.

I have a Glock 23 and a CM40... honestly, I'd say the recoil is about the same if not slightly less on the CM40... I'm also more accurate with it than with my Glock, but a lot of that is probably the trigger.

Thanks. Looking at gunbroker.com $740 isn't a bad price for a pm45 w/ the laserguard installed.

I'm in exactly the same boat with exactly the same two guns with exactly the same findings. I don't think the .40 is bad at all in the CM. I actually enjoy shooting it.

I have always heard that Glocks are the snappiest .40s out. I never enjoyed them, and sold them all. Only 9mm glocks for me.

I have both a pm9 and a pm45. Yes the 45 recoils more but I don't find it to be an issue. I actually shoot the 45 better than the pm9. When I take them both to the range I always shoot the 45 first. That way I really don't notice the greater recoil while I shoot it.

I had my 40 Magnaported and it shoots just fine.

Thanks for the info. I have 2 .40 Glocks. 27 and 23 and I shoot them well. Follow ups are better on the 23, but not buy a lot.

Sounds like recoil on the PM45 won't be any bigger of an issue than with the PM40. I guess it just comes down to personal preference. I made the mistake of buying 4 different caliber guns... .380, 9mm, .40 and .45. Now I can't really use the "stay with alike calibers" excuse. Maybe I'll stop and look at that PM45 again.

I have all three calibers and two .40... my Mag-na-ported P40 and my Compensated Glock 23C. The first is like shooting +P in a 9mm... not bad at all. The Glock is like shooting a 9mm... a bit more hand-filling than the P40, which is perfect for me. I love the K/P/CW "full-sized" compact Kahrs. The T-series seems out of proprtion to me... grips too long.
I have the PM45 and it's really more of a push, but my .40's are all compensated, so I can't compare with full-blown .40 recoil, but I do kind of think the PM40 must have pretty sharp recoil... opinion, though.

So your saying I'm too boring and monotonous and I need to step it up some?

I just got the Springfield XDs 45 and the recoil is not bad at all. In fact, i think its about the same as shooting my CM9. the XDS is bigger but still concealable.

The only .40 i shot seemed like it had more snap and the muzzle jumped more than a 9 or 45. But it was managable. i think the .40 is a great SD weapon but not the best range caliber.

subjective as recoil is, there a member on here who has posted a video of him shooting the various PM guns with a grid scale in the back ground so you can measure recoil in his hands. very informative, slow motion video.

I have the 3 calibers in SAI xd's and steel framed compact pistols. Can't tell you about Glock 30 or 23. Recoil is a somewhat subjective feeling. Second shot and on repeatability is better with steel framed guns as you would expect with compact models. It somewhat depends on weight of pistol - if they are comparable then the 45 is a push the 40 is a snap and the 9 - well it's a 9. If you like the 1911 frame but not the gun then try a XD compact or subcompact and see how it feels compared to your Glock. If you like a 1911 style but want more rounds, then look at a compact Para double stack. In single stack Ruger, Rem, Kimber, SAI and the rest are available. It is less expensive to shoot the 40 with factory ammo from Walmart. Reloading is about the same cost with 45 acp brass lasting a bit longer for me. Personally I carry the 45 and 9 over the 40 as I have never warmed to the 40 in a compact pistol. IMO there is nothing wrong with your 9 mm with premium defense ammo.
