We have a couple of pounds of Win. 231 and we plan to load 45 acp 230gr FMJ.

I would appreciate some load recommendations for the above bullets.

Thus far the data I have suggests;
OAL 1.2 powder charge of; (min) 4.2 to 5.3 (max)

Any suggestions?
Thank you kindly.

Hodgdon makes Winchester powder and W231 is the same as HP-38

Hey Tilos, the site you listed is the one I used (and commonly use) to get the data I listed above. I guess we are on the same page.
Thanks

my Hornaday 7th edition manual lists win 231/ 230 fmj /col 1.230 at
700 fps 5.0gr., 750 fps 5.4gr., 800 fps at max load 5.7gr.

I use Winchester 231 and 230 gr FMJ's. I load around 5.4. I did some at 5.5 and 5.6 as well and they worked equally well.

I've loaded both small primer Speer and Blazer aluminum cases and large primer standard stuff with equal success as well.

Wow! You are creative and brave....I always knew that, but now I'm talking about reloading! You are the only person I know who has loaded aluminum
cases. Did you run out of brass?
One more question; what OAL did you use?

Thanks,
Cyber Hubby

I don't post load data and risk a typo that could hurt someone, but I will post a link to data I've used/found.:D

I refer to Blazer brass case. Aluminum cases can't be reloaded.

I don't recall my OAL and I'm far from home. Tilos has a good point about typo's. I'm certain of my charge and I reread my post to make sure I didn't goof.

Hey Bawanna, blazer brass makes a whole lot more sense.

I just read your post to my Husband and all I can say is never talk to him about OAL... he takes that conversation in a whole different direction.

If you were asking about using AA#7 or Unique with those pretty green 230 gr Bayou Bullets, I'd talk ...... I'm cheap ..... more into quality lead :)

We will get to the Bayou Bullets eventually. We are still fairly new to reloading
so we will stay with what we know for now.

Had a chance to go "next door" behind my son's house and test out my new XDs45 with some of the 230 gr LRN Bayou Bullet + 10 gr AA#7 loads. Nice :)

OAL was/is 1.25. It worked like a charm in my Kimber, and just as well in the new XDs to my delight. Closed them with a Lee Factory Crimp Die. I'm sure there are better powders for the .45 acp than Unique and AA#7, but that's what I had on hand before the late, great component shortage. The #7 was a delight to shoot, from the first round I ran through the Kimber in February right on through to the last round I fired yesterday through the XDs.

And even in the new Springer barrel, where you would normally expect a bit of rough machining marks or tiny burrs, still absolutely no sign of leading. Obviously 25 rounds isn't a lot of sampling for diagnosing leading issues, but I don't think the Bayou Bullets are going to be an issue anyway, especially at .45 acp velocities. I really need to get my own chrony since I lost my reloading mentor about three weeks ago ... the day before we left for our trip to Alaska. I sure miss Mack, but so do about a thousand other folks that knew him so well.
