View Full Version : P45 Marking Brass

Hey, I have a question. I am noticing these marks on rounds I am firing through my P45. Any thoughts? The two Photos are the same piece of brass, just rotated. I am just wondering if it is anything i can fix or should be concerned about.

KahrArmed:

My P45 leaves some big chinks out of the rim too. I can feel them when I roll the case between my fingers. I also noticed a dent in the casing too.

Your post on my earlier thread mentioned a 500 round break in. Your observation was spot on. Approx 650 for me and the stovepipes and FTEs went away. My P40 was the same regarding rnd count to breakin. The manual is way off on this IMHO.

I'll watch this thread closely. I say if it feeds and ejects well, don't fix it if it aint broke.

Thanks Knkali. I have just started reloading, so I am hoping to not have to mess with the brass too much after using it, I mean, maybe having to file the rough spots down and such. Really would like to just fix it:)

Is every round chewed like that consistently or just one once in awhile?

They seemed to be coming out fairly consistently, but i didn't notice it until i was just about done shooting, so I can't be exactly sure.

It really doesn't look like an extractor bite, too narrow, it's catching something on the way out.

I'd be tempted to smear a little prussian blue or some sort of marker around the ejection port and see where it's hitting.

Doubt you can replicate it cycling fast by hand with an empty case but I'd give it a try.

Prussian makes kind of a mess so not sure that would such a good idea in this case.

Have you tried slipping a case under the extractor with just the slide and seeing if it's snug or loose? Maybe it's just kicking the case out too quick or not quite quick enough.

I will check the shell out with just the slide. Notice that the marks are very similar on both sides of the shell too.

Is there any difference between brands of ammo.?

Here is a round in the slide behind the ejector Bawanna.

Interesting….this might be off the "chip" topic but when I'm looking at your
primer (obviously not the best angle for what I'm saying) I think I detect some
primer smear. I might be all wet, I/we've only been reloading give or take a year.

KahrArmed

what do you mean by primer smear?

KahrArmed

If you are referring to the drag outside the initial impact area of the striker, as I understand it that is the way primers tend to look with the P45.

Ok, I didn't know that the P45 did that. I have a PM9 and TP45, no P45.

Sometimes a primer smear can happen from barrel movement or a very hot
powder charge.
Maybe someone with more experience can chime in.

I'm always learning!

Nice pictures! If that was a new case, then the marks must be made as the round comes out of the magazine. Look for a burr on the lips of your mag. Feel the inside of the mag lips with your finger to see if there is a rough spot. The marks are getting there before the round is fired. IMO

Makes perfect sense to me--especially since he said there were matching marks on the other side.

I am using a modified Kimber Officer's mag, so i will take a close look at it

Using that mag might be causing the case to hit too low on the feed ramp and forcing the round up into the leading edge of the mag lips and causing the marks. To test if that is it, go back to the original Kahr mags and see if you still get the marks.

Okay, here is the mag from a couple different angles. I see your recommendation Ikeo, obviously can't check that out in the garage :( If anyone sees any other problems with the mag, let me know.

We're close to April 1st, but we're not there yet.

FWIW I am getting this sort of thing with Kahr mags. When I hand rack I get a slight feel of where the extractor is but definitely different(more) when fired.

I am gonna watch thread still but think I'll take Jockos advice and "shoot it like I stole it." I think that is what he says. However reloading could be a trouble with this situation.

How smooth can you insert brass into the extractor from the bottom of the slide?

My PM40 extractor would dig into the brass quite a bit before I worked on it.

Mine did the exact same thing for the first few hundred rounds. I figured it was the sharp edge of the ejector pushing out the spent case. The P45 has the ejector with the squared edges, so it digs into the cases a bit during break in. 1,600 rounds now, no more chunks out of the cases and brass in not distorted or misshapen.
This is a video I made in response to a fellow Kahr owner whose cam was contacting the magazine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMNbNChSc2I
I show this only because the ejector is clearly visible.

Here it is firing 27 rounds with no hiccups:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfLWi7R_5og

No more problems, no complaints. It took a lot of sanding, polishing and finding the root cause of my problems before it was finally able to fire and cycle without incident.

It appears to me that your mag modification needs to be "smoothed up".

Use a fine file, or sandpaper, to deburr the edges of the mag. You don't want to remove metal, just "dull" the edges. Sometimes even a new mag needs to be deburred.

Try it, it can't hurt!

Just my 2 bits worth:D
