View Full Version : Do you have a shooting range out your back door?

I have periodically seen comments by members who have to wait until whenever to test whatever because they need to go to a range to do so. I have also seen some comments by people who have a range in their backyard.

I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones to have a range out my back door. I would be very interested in seeing what your personal ranges look like to maybe give me ideas on alterations to mine.

I don't have a "range" out my back door but I do shoot off to the side of the house. No range or anything like that. Thick trees that you couldn't cut through with an M-2 after shooting for days so a perfect back stop. We just put up a few targets and have some fun.

Now, we will be moving later this week and I just might put up a few steel targets that we can shoot off the back deck. For longer range shooting I'll be using the very, very close Pike National Forest.

Yes, I do have a range. But I think I am a little jealous anyway, recalling your previous posts on relocating. Range or no range, sounds like a great place settle.

Yes...We have a 100 yrd range and an archery range on our 950 acre property. Also have a 14 acre sportsmen's club 5 minutes away, which is where I go most of the time for solo range time. It has a 50 yard range with a shooting bench at 25 and 50. I don't like to use my personal range because it is between two of my many deer hunting stands. I also have 2500 acres with a 14 target 3D archery range and a 200 yard range with a covered bench which I use for longer range sighting in with my PM40....LOL.
We have 5 local IDPA courses too. All in Upstate NY.

We shoot off our patio which on the north side of our house, it is covered by overhang. The range has a 50' berm for paper targets in the back yard, a 40 yard gong in a ravine and a 120 yard gong up past a pasture. I dug a small earthen berm behind the 120 yard gong. Behind this last berm is a mile of hardwoods

Last year we harvested the trees in the back half of the ravine to open up to the far target. So far we have only hit the far gong a few times with hand guns.

Our gongs are sections of a 6" I beam.

Yep, I live in open hardwoods and hills... Got a range very similar to hickok 45's just out the back door... Now if just had the ammo supply he does.....

I have a 50 yard shooting range in my back yard.

Since the Newtown/Sandy Hook shooting - I live in Southbury, CT which is one of the bordering towns - I give my town police dispatcher a heads up that I'll be shooting on my property. I'll also tell them what type of shooting I'll be doing and for approximately how long. They seem to appreciate the call.

In the second picture you can see the parts of my "range" that I use the most. An arrow backstop and airsoft plate targets. Laying on the ground (I should have thought to stand it up for the photo) is a pvc pipe manikin with tin airsoft plates attached just like you see on the trees. With the tree mounted plates and the manikin I'm able to set set up scenario to safely practice with using either my Glock 26 or XDM Compact .45 airsoft blowback pistol.

I like to see what others have to get some ideas for targets and benches. Thanks for posting.
This is what I have. It is pretty basic but I can go out to a little over 100 yards. If I get a real wild hair, I can go across the street and use the range that these guys have. http://www.surgeonrifles.com/ :84:

Take down a few trees and add his nice table and you'd have a mirror image of Hickoks range. Looks near identical. In fact at first I thought you might have photo shopped his range and added the trees.

Very cool.

One of these years (I have often threatened but not yet done), I am going to sit in a lawn chair on the back porch during dove season and pass shoot a few coming down the tree line. Just to say I did it. :33:
Well, that AND they are really good eating!

Just built mine, still a work in progress but it's nice to be able to shoot at my place and know I'm safe. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/20/e5eqy6ur.jpg

DavidS nice place you have there maybe I need to come up with1k reloads and make an afternoon of it : )

Up til a year and half ago I had my own range, but have moved more city bound to be closer to Drs. as my family was involved in a major head on collision...
Anyhow it seems I shoot more now then ever before, something about knowing I just cant go outside and shoot let alone take a whiz that drives me crazy....
